Palestine’s Ambassador to the UK, His Excellency Dr Husam Zomlot, has written a letter of thanks to Leicester City FC players Hamza Choudury and Wesley Fofana after they displayed the Palestinian flag during their team’s celebrations on winning yesterday’s FA Cup Final at Wembley.
Choudury and Fofana held the flag aloft during their lap of honour at the conclusion of the match and Choudury then draped it across his shoulders as he collected his winner’s medal. The two players carried out their gesture of solidarity in the home of football as Gaza was undergoing its sixth day of successive aerial bombardment at the hands of Israel which, after a further day’s attacks, has killed at least 188 Palestinians including 55 children and 33 women.
In his letter Dr Zomlot offers his profound thanks to the victorious pair and declares that their show of support “is reverberating all over Palestine”. He notes that “for a people beleaguered, occupied and under intense bombardment for daring to stand up for their rights, [their] gesture could not be more timely and appreciated”.
