Letter: IMPROPER TREATMENT OF PALESTINIAN FOOTBALL PRESIDENT

Red Card Israeli Racism Campaign

PO Box BM PSA, London, WC1N 3KK

1st January 2013

Mr Michel Platini, President,

European Football Association,

Nyon,

Switzerland

Dear Mr Platini,

IMPROPER TREATMENT OF PALESTINIAN FOOTBALL PRESIDENT

The Israel government removed VIP status from the Palestinian Football Association’s President Jamal Rajoub with respect to movements into and out of Palestine. This was instigated shortly after the United Nations General Assembly recognised Palestine as a state.

This is a very clear indication of the use of football for political purposes and of the underlying racism of the Israeli government towards Palestinians.

FIFA is reported to have asked Mr Luzon to help rectify the situation. We appeal to UEFA to make a similar and public request to the Israeli authorities.

UEFA is inconsistent in working to combat racism in some circumstances and being complicit with racism in others. It appears to endorse Israeli racism by holding a tournament there in 2013. Therefore we renew our request move the June 2013 UEFA U21 finals to a European country for the good name of European football. Security concerns only emphasise this need.

We trust that this will be considered at next week’s meeting of the UEFA Executive Committee.

Yours sincerely,

Geoff Lee,

Campaign coordinator.
