Protest on 15 September in Newport at the Wales v Israel women’s match

Palestinian solidarity demonstrators protested in Newport at the Euro 2017 Women’s Wales v Israel match, which Wales won 3-0.  Some demonstrators managed to get into the ground and, after the national anthems had been played, waved Palestinian flags and called for support for Palestinian women players – calls which were audible to all spectators.

The Protest started at 5.00pm in central Newport with several excellent speeches.  PSC honorary chairman Betty Hunter led with a rallying call to action and was followed by Ella Furness who had visited Palestine recently to play football.  Former ecumenical accompanier and RCIR activist Ann Wright explained the main RCIR actions and Merav Pirchassoff discussed the challenges faced by Jewish supporters of Palestinian human rights.  Green party local leader and activist Pippa Bartolotti added her support and Newport activist Kajsa Anckarstrom read out a message from residents of Umm Al Khair where Israeli forces have been busy destroying homes and the community centre.
