Celtic fans demonstrated forcibly both inside and outside the ground at the 17 August 2016 UEFA Champions League match against Hapoel Beer Sheva. The Scotsman the previous day carried an article pointing out that Scottish law would only be broken if waving of flags constituted “stirring up hatred”. Of course, waving a Palestinian flag does not. It remains to be seen if UEFA will consider this incident as political, rather then human rights, in which case it will impose a fine as it has done in the past. A video of the demonstration outside the ground is here (thanks to Hispantv)
This game was the first leg of the final qualifying round for Celtic. With a 5-2 victory behind them Celtic look likely to progress, and Hapoel Beer Sheva will be eliminated, when the second leg is played on 23rd August.
At this stage, Beitar Jerusalem and Maccabi Tel Aviv remain in the Europa League and their second leg matches against St Etienne and Hajduk Split respectively are played on 25th August 2016.
