FIFA video portrays football in Palestine, with clear signs that not all is well

FIFA has taken the unusual step of producing a high quality video of football in Palestine.  It is entitled “Football unites – inspires in Palestine”, lasts just over five minutes, and is available at  http://www.fifa.com/about-fifa/videos/y=2016/m=7/video=football-unifies-inspires-in-palestine-2811289.html  and was published on 6 July 2016.

After emphasising the importance of football in unifying Palestinian people and showing the development of the women’s game the video shows the reality of village football.  The village of Umm Al Khair is used as an example and it shows the visit of a team from the neighbouring village of Susiya.  The pitch is small and very rough.  At one end is the “separation fance” and every ball that goes over “will never come back”.  Over the fence are the neat rows of settlement houses.

The Susiya team is shown wearing shirts sponsored by Cardiff PSC.  We hope that other groups will similarly support.

But there has been an appalling history of Israeli harassment of the Umm Al Khair and Susiya villagers.  Our post on 9 August 2016  gives the latest installment.
